Training Camp - Days 25 & 26
March 4th, 2010 8:37PM
Mountains Spring Pass and Death Valley were the rides these days. Mtn Springs Pass is a 3000+ ascent from the house. It is a straight shot up Blue Diamond Highway. The grades are moderate until you get to altitude. At that point the Mountain adds a little "kick" with some 6-8% sections to spice things up. The riders that made it to the top gutted it out. And, talking about gutting it out, Death Valley turned into quite the experience. We wanted some heat and the Valley provided it. Tempratures were in the high 70's as we took off for Stove Pipe Wells. Everyone was reporting great legs, in part thanks to the high pressure at 200 feet below sea level and the we had to return. As I turned to head back to Furnace Creek I noticed something troubling, something I had never seen but knew about, a sand storm. The winds that were scheduled for... (

Training Camp - Days 23 & 24
March 1st, 2010 10:30PM
Well a new group from Tennessee and New Jersey are here. The first day I took the boys out to Lake Mead National Recreation Area. We parked just outside the west gate and rode out near Redstones. The 50 mile round trip beat a few of the new comers up. It was warm and the lack of acclimating to the 67 degree temps had a few cramping. Today we headed out the front door for a 50 mile round trip to Red Rock Canyon and back. The loop is uphill all the way to the look out and then a fun ripping downhill the way back. We had fun mixing it up on the hill in the Scenic Loop and on the way home. Everyone felt a little better but still not totally acclimated.... (

Training Camp - Days 19 & 20
February 27th, 2010 11:59PM
On the 19th day of camp the Coach needed a rest and sent the athletes out from the house on a "Your Choice" ride. All the riders knocked down the intensity a little and recharged the batteries. Red Rock Canyon is a 50 mile round trip from the house and almost all riders got in part of this scenic loop. On the 20th day of camp, Propellers 6th, we headed back to Lake Mead for a beautiful ride along Northshore Rd. We started just outside the park and headed north and east 28 miles to Redstones. ... (

Training Camp - Days 17 and 18
February 24th, 2010 12:00PM
The weather seemed a little below par on Propeller's 3rd day so we decided to make the trip to Death Valley. It was worth the trip. Temps were 15 degrees warmer that in Vegas and the sunny was shining. We had a a solid head wind out to Stove Pipe Wells but the ride back was blast. On the 4th day I took the team to the camp favorite Valley of Fire. The athletes were blown away by the riding and the sites. ... (
